Cost to Move to New Zealand from the USA
New Zealand is the longest sea route on this calculator and has the strictest biosecurity regime of any destination on it. Both facts should shape the move: ship early, and ship clean.
What it costs
Door-to-door sea and air freight ranges from New York to New Zealand, by home size. Ranges include origin services, freight, destination services and routine clearance. They are planning figures, not quotes — a firm price needs a survey of your home.
| Home size | Sea freight | Air freight |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | $4,160 – $6,500 | $8,320 – $18,200 |
| 1 bedroom | $5,850 – $9,750 | $11,700 – $27,300 |
| 2 bedrooms | $9,100 – $15,600 | $18,200 – $43,680 |
| 3 bedrooms | $13,000 – $20,800 | $26,000 – $58,240 |
| 4 bedrooms | $17,550 – $28,600 | $35,100 – $80,080 |
| 5+ bedrooms | $23,400 – $39,000 | $46,800 – $109,200 |
Distance and thin traffic compound each other here. There is far less US–New Zealand household freight than US–Australia, so shared containers wait longer to fill and some routings tranship through Australia. That transhipment is normal, but it adds a week or two and is worth confirming in the quote.

How long it takes
9–13 weeks door to door from the East Coast, less from the West Coast. Then add MPI inspection on arrival, which is thorough and takes its own time.
Customs and duty
NZCS 218 and MPI biosecurity
The customs side is the NZCS 218 Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration, and used household goods owned and used for at least 12 months generally enter free of duty and GST for someone arriving on a residence or returning-resident basis. The Ministry for Primary Industries handles biosecurity and applies it harder than almost anywhere else. Every shipment is risk-assessed and many are physically inspected. Outdoor equipment, wooden and cane items, footwear, bicycles, tents and anything agricultural draws attention, and treatment costs are yours.
Customs requirements change and are applied at the discretion of the authorities at the border. Treat this as orientation, not advice — confirm current requirements with your moving company or the destination’s customs authority before you ship.
What you cannot ship to New Zealand
- Food, seeds, plants, honey and animal products are prohibited.
- Soil is prohibited absolutely — check hiking boots, sports cleats, tent pegs and plant pots.
- Used outdoor and camping equipment is inspected as a matter of course.
- Untreated wooden items may require fumigation on arrival.
- Firearms require a New Zealand permit arranged in advance.
Common questions
Is New Zealand biosecurity stricter than Australia?
Generally, yes — and both are strict. MPI inspects a high proportion of household consignments and is unsentimental about treating or destroying what fails. The preparation is the same as for Australia, just applied more carefully: nothing with soil, nothing organic, everything outdoor scrubbed genuinely clean.
Why does shipping take so long?
Distance plus traffic volume. It is the far side of the world from the US East Coast, and the lane is thin enough that consolidation at origin and transhipment through Australia are both common. Start the process earlier than you think you need to.
Should I ship or replace my furniture?
On this route the question is a fair one, because freight is expensive and slow. Ordinary flat-pack furniture rarely justifies three months at sea. Pieces with real value — antiques, good solid furniture, anything you would grieve — usually still do.
