Door-to-door sea and air freight ranges from New York to the United Kingdom, by home size. Ranges include origin services, freight, destination services and routine clearance. They are planning figures, not quotes — a firm price needs a survey of your home.

How long it takes
Door to door from the US East Coast, sea freight is typically 4–6 weeks, with roughly two of those weeks on the water and the rest split between packing, consolidation, customs and final delivery. From the West Coast add one to two weeks. Air freight lands in days but generally costs two to three times as much.
Customs and duty
Transfer of Residence relief (ToR1)
Bringing used household goods into the UK duty- and VAT-free depends on Transfer of Residence relief, which you apply for yourself — your moving company cannot do it for you. The application is the ToR1 form to HMRC, it is free, and it returns a unique reference number that gets quoted on the import entry. Broadly, HMRC expects that you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months, that the goods have been owned and used for at least six months, and that you keep them rather than sell them for 12 months after import. Apply early. HMRC has been known to take several weeks, and a container that arrives without a reference number goes into paid storage while you wait.
Customs requirements change and are applied at the discretion of the authorities at the border. Treat this as orientation, not advice — confirm current requirements with your moving company or the destination’s customs authority before you ship.
What you cannot ship to the UK
- Meat, dairy and most other animal products cannot be brought in from outside the EU, even sealed and shop-bought.
- Plants, seeds, bulbs and soil-bearing garden items need a phytosanitary certificate and are usually not worth the trouble.
- Firearms and most bladed weapons require a licence arranged before the shipment moves, not on arrival.
- Alcohol in a household shipment is dutiable — it is not covered by Transfer of Residence relief.
Common questions
Do I have to be in the UK before my shipment arrives?
Not necessarily, but your Transfer of Residence reference number does need to exist before the goods land. Plenty of people apply while still in the US and travel separately. What causes trouble is arriving without the reference at all — the shipment cannot clear, and demurrage and storage start accruing at the port.
Is it cheaper to ship to Southampton or Liverpool?
The port itself rarely moves the number much; what moves it is the road leg at the far end. A delivery address in the South East is naturally served by Southampton or London Gateway, and one in the North West by Liverpool. Your moving company will route to whichever produces the shorter inland run, and you should not pay a premium to specify a port.
Can I ship my car to the UK?
You can, and it is a separate exercise from the household goods with its own paperwork, its own relief application, and DVLA registration plus an approval test at the far end. Whether it is worth it depends almost entirely on the car — for an ordinary vehicle the cost of shipping, converting and registering often exceeds the difference against buying locally.
