Cost to Move to Portugal from the USA
Portugal has been one of the fastest-growing US relocation destinations of the last few years, and the moving lane has thickened along with it. Freight costs sit in the normal European band; the paperwork is lighter than Spain's or France's, but it is not optional.
What it costs
Door-to-door sea and air freight ranges from New York to Portugal, by home size. Ranges include origin services, freight, destination services and routine clearance. They are planning figures, not quotes — a firm price needs a survey of your home.
| Home size | Sea freight | Air freight |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | $3,200 – $5,000 | $6,400 – $14,000 |
| 1 bedroom | $4,500 – $7,500 | $9,000 – $21,000 |
| 2 bedrooms | $7,000 – $12,000 | $14,000 – $33,600 |
| 3 bedrooms | $10,000 – $16,000 | $20,000 – $44,800 |
| 4 bedrooms | $13,500 – $22,000 | $27,000 – $61,600 |
| 5+ bedrooms | $18,000 – $30,000 | $36,000 – $84,000 |
Portugal is a smaller market than Spain, so direct sailings are less frequent and a shared container can wait longer at origin. Some carriers route Portuguese freight through a Spanish port and truck it across, which is worth knowing about when you compare transit times between quotes.

How long it takes
5–7 weeks door to door from the East Coast. Madeira and the Azores are separate legs and add meaningfully to both time and cost.
Customs and duty
NIF and the certificado de bagagem
Two documents matter. The first is a NIF — the Portuguese tax number — which you will need for essentially every transaction in the country and which identifies you on the import entry. The second is the certificado de bagagem, a certificate of transfer of residence obtained from the Portuguese consulate covering your US state, submitted with a valued inventory in Portuguese. Standard EU conditions: residence outside the EU for at least 12 months, goods owned and used for at least six.
Customs requirements change and are applied at the discretion of the authorities at the border. Treat this as orientation, not advice — confirm current requirements with your moving company or the destination’s customs authority before you ship.
What you cannot ship to Portugal
- Meat and dairy from outside the EU are prohibited.
- The inventory must be in Portuguese and valued.
- Madeira and the Azores involve a second shipping leg and should be quoted separately.
- Firearms require prior PSP authorisation.
Common questions
How do I get a NIF from the USA?
Non-residents generally obtain one through a fiscal representative in Portugal or via the consulate, and it is the sort of thing worth doing early since it gates so much else. It is not expensive, but it is not instant either.
Is shipping to Porto cheaper than Lisbon?
The freight difference is small; the road leg decides it. Leixões serves the north, Lisbon the centre and south. Compare door-to-door totals rather than port charges.
What does it cost to move a two-bedroom apartment to Lisbon?
From the East Coast by sea a two-bedroom shipment usually lands in the high four figures to low five figures door to door. The calculator will price your own combination.
